All about life in Johannesburg

So I went Speed Dating…

Last Wednesday, the giant pimple on my face and I went Speed Dating.  When my cousin had invited me a few weeks earlier, I absent-mindedly agreed, thinking that I would never really, actually go. At most, I’d maybe just tweet about that one time I almost went Speed Dating.

Wednesday came, along with the most spectacular display of adult acne.  And it was cold.  And I had nothing to wear.  And I reeeally didn’t want to go and meet some crazy man who had gerbils for housemates and thought false nails were a look, for himself.  But then my cousin reminded me of my New Year’s Resolutions and I thought of the blog post material the evening might produce.  Curiosity took over in a force even bigger than my giant pimple, and so off into the cold night air my giant pimple and I went. Ghost Stories

Pre-Ghost Tour snacks at our house.  Ghost Pops, Skull Gums and ‘Veins’. Obs.

Pre-Ghost Tour ghosts at our house – Make yours with balloons, sandwich paper and a permanent marker.

On Saturday night, seven of us friends put on as many layers of clothing as we could find and headed out into the freezing (literally) Joburg night to The Mystery Ghost Bus Tour.  The tour is run mostly from a bus (with the locations kept secret and changing with every tour).  And includes two pubs stops and a midnight visit to a graveyard.  Even though I am a huge scaredy cat, I would really like to go back to some of the buildings that we saw and go exploring.  Did you know that there is a castle in Kensington?  Our Kensington?!

There were several times where I found myself wanting to yell, ‘Stop the bus! Let’s go inside and find ourselves some ghost friends!’  And I would have loved to hear some more stories and details of the buildings we drove past.

It was fascinating to be reminded how old and steeped in stories of days gone by our city is.  And ameezing to be on a midnight adventure with friends.  And hip flasks.  Ooooooohhoooo.

Vital Ghost Tour Prep.

Cousin Robyn

This is what zero degrees at midnight in a graveyard looks like.  Thanks James for this photo.

Pub stop at The Troyville Hotel.  The moment we all became zombies…

Joburg Taught Me…

To see magic in the unexpected.
That there are stories everywhere.
When things are getting tough, look up.
We may not have the mountain or the sea, but Joburg’s every changing sky is like
a window to another world.
There is beauty in imperfection.
To remember that the seasons always transform this city. What a wonderful surprise.
Oh the sunsets.
Oh the sunrises.
Friendly, kind people. I’m super proud to say we have them in boat loads around here.

Speaking of the sky, this is what it looked like yesterday morning.

Pack your pjs and come with me, back in time, to Paris.

Tucked away unashamedly in Northlands Deco Park is a little jewellery box, treasure chest, magicalness of a shop called La Bella Maison.  From crystal chandeliers and french furniture to vintage wedding dresses, this space is a fantasy land of old world whimsy.  Also, they have ameezing cakes and coffee whipped up by a wonderfully friendly barista.

Pack some padkos and make the well worthwhile trip to Unit 21, Deco Park, Northriding. (Just down the road from Chamdors Factory Fabrics).

PS. Another favourite, ameezing Joburg store here.

Let Them Eat Cupcakes

After some snoozing and loads of working, I am so excited to come back a bit later and tell you all about this amazing space.  If Marie Antoinette were alive today, this is where she would shop.  They also sell several kinds of cake.  And tutus.  And vintage wedding dresses.  And antique rolls of ribbon.  Oooh la la.

Happy Friday Ameezings, a tout a l’heure.

{That’s my elbow doing a bit of a ‘Where’s Wally’ in the mirror there.  Where is Scott Schuman when you need him?}

Bowling For Valentine

Last night, 15 of us went bowling for Valentine’s Day.  There was pizza, drinks, loads of cheering, a couple of strikes (including a seriously impressive backwards through the legs throw), some more cheering and a very large cockroach that scuttled across the floor as a photo was being taken.

It was one of my favourite Valentine’s Days ever.  And definitely the best 15 person date I’ve ever been on.

Because it was a fancy pants bowling alley with loads of uv lights and glow in the dark paint (did I mention the cockroach?), all of my photos came out looking a little like they are from the past, and the future, and maybe a little underwater.  Bowling for Valentine’s Day, ameezing.

Oh, and I came last in my team.  Blushy face.
