The other day I overheard a conversation between a young girl and her friend. They were talking about things they’d like to change about themselves and body image. The girl said to her friend, ‘Yes, but my mom always says, ‘Would you talk to other people the way you talk to yourself?’
My ears went prickly and my cheeks went the colour of sunburn as I suddenly realised that I wouldn’t. Ever. I would never tell someone else that they have an abnormally large head or flabby arms or that they can’t do the things they want to do in life. Or many of the other little negative mantras chasing themselves around my head.
I wanted to run up to the girl and thank her and her Mom for their wise words. Lesson learned. Eavesdropping and being nicer to yourself, ameezing.
